So, I'm back in the saddle, but it's another slow day in commentland. There were a number of decent and half-decent comments out there, but only one made it to the favorites. Pick it up, people.
Favorites, in no particular order (there's one):
This is a great joke by The Amazing Sneijderman in the Greek Coach post. It would be the Comment of the Day most days, so it is today. I love this joke for several reasons. First, and most importantly, it's funny. That's a great punchline. On another level, though, I enjoy it because I can see the thought process that went into this joke, and it gives some insight into how to make a great Deadspin joke. I'll elaborate:
First, you see the keyword "soda" in the headline. Regular Gawker-brandTM readers will recognize that there have been numerous articles in the past about the soda/pop/coke/soft drink dialect differences in North American. TAS seizes on this as a possible source of humor. He likely wrote out the first one or two headlines to get the ball rolling along these lines, but realized that it wasn't going to be enough to carry a joke with. But we've moved the goalposts now, while keeping within the framework of the post. It's almost like free-association at this point. The reference to "pop" allowed the joke to be framed by way of multiple headlines, which trades on the dialect trope discussed above. The punchline has nothing to do with the actual subject material of the post, but Sneijderman made it work, because he crafted the joke perfectly. The punchline is a damning shot at a questionable media outlet (that isn't Deadspin this time!!!1!) that is expertly done. I'd bet that from initial thought to final punchline, this joke took no more than 2 minutes to write. I love it, and I didn't love much today.
Total Fucking Duds
Don't do this, Shipwreck's Parrot. If you're going to go the "obvious joke" route, you have to make it super-creative, or crazy, like UAE did in the earlier Pistorius post. This one lands with a big, dumb, thud.
I hate shit like this so much. 26 recs, at press time. Fuck that.
Point out the decent and half-decent comments downstairs.
