All right, folks, here's how this will go.
I've posted the entire pool schedule here so you can scout out your opponents early. Here is the online platform that I'm operating the league with. At this site, you can go through the schedule, see past results, check the standings, and so on. It is semi-user-friendly, so most of you should be able to figure your way through the site. It is a UK-based site so it uses a bunch of fucked-up terms like "fixtures" and "league tables", but you guys all like soccer so you'll figure it the fuck out.
As for the operation of the league itself, every week during the regular season I will put a post on Sidespin on either Monday night or Tuesday morning listing the pool matchups and the eligible NFL games for the upcoming weekend. Thursday games will not be eligible, except on your Thanksgiving weekend (Week 13).
At some time during the week, but before 3pm Eastern on the Friday (I'll change this deadline for Week 13) you need to send me your picks. These picks are straight up, with no point spread. You will pick 10 games, and one of them must be the Monday nighter. (Exceptions to this are: Week 1 - there are two Monday night games, and you must pick both; Week 13 - you must pick all three Thursday games plus the Monday game; and Week 17 - there's no Monday game).
Here's what the Week 1 NFL lineup looks like (you'll see I've carefully left out the Thursday game):
|NO||@ATL||SUN, SEP 7|
|BUF||@CHI||SUN, SEP 7|
|TEN||@KC||SUN, SEP 7|
|MIN||@STL||SUN, SEP 7|
|NE||@MIA||SUN, SEP 7|
|OAK||@NYJ||SUN, SEP 7|
|JAX||@PHI||SUN, SEP 7|
|CLE||@PIT||SUN, SEP 7|
|CIN||@BAL||SUN, SEP 7|
|WAS||@HOU||SUN, SEP 7|
|SF||@DAL||SUN, SEP 7|
|CAR||@TB||SUN, SEP 7|
|IND||@DEN||SUN, SEP 7|
|NYG||@DET||MON, SEP 8|
|SD||@ARI||MON, SEP 8|
Send me the picks either by Twitter DM (@DougExeter) or by email to DeadspinFootball@gmail.com. I prefer Twitter DM.
Please send the picks by listing the two- or three-letter abbreviation separated by a single space, such as the following:
MIA NYJ PHI PIT BAL HOU DAL TB DEN DET
At some point, probably Friday afternoon/evening, I will input everyone's picks into the online platform so it will be visible to everyone. It will look something like this:
If you don't get your picks in on time, then you will default to picking the road teams for the last ten games on the schedule. If you fail to get picks in again, then you'll get the same default teams and you'll get penalized one point for every week over one that you've fucked up. Just get me the damn picks on time. I'll remind you via twitter if you haven't.
Scoring is as follows: if your team wins the game, you get one point. Ties and losses count for the same: piss all. If your teams win six and tie one, and your opponent goes 6-4, tough shit. That counts as a 6-6 tie.
At the end of the season, the top 6 teams in each conference go to the playoffs. Tiebreakers will be determined as follows:
1. Most wins;
2. Head-to-head record;
3. Total number of correct picks for season;
4. Coin toss.
Playoff format is the same as the NFL. #1 and #2 seeds get a first-round bye. #3 plays #6 in the wild card week and #4 plays #5. Teams will be re-seeded for the divisional playoff week.
Since the playoffs (just like in real-life) offer a much smaller sample size, here's how they will go:
Wild Card and Divisonal Rounds: The higher ranked team will pick three winners out of the four games. The lower ranked team automatically gets the opponents. Whoever wins more advances.
Conference Final and Super Bowl: The higher ranked team picks one winner out of the two games in the Conference Finals, or picks the Super Bowl winner. The lower ranked team automatically gets the opponent. Winner advances.
The winner of the pool will get, I don't know, some stupid electronic trophy or something. Maybe I'll send you a toonie.
Have fun. I'll put the week 1 post up early next week.
