I saw today that Ed Sabol died. Most people over the age of 30 know the name Sabol, though it is often associated with Ed’s son Steve. Ed and Steve’s work starting and sustaining NFL Films has lived on 50 years. Together with John Facenda they made the NFL seem mythical to impressionable young sports fans like me in the days before cable and slow-motion Deadspin Video.

Fifty years, though, is nothing for Ed Sabol. According to ESPN’s obituary, he was married to his wife for 74 years. May we all be so lucky.

Only Chris Berman could tarnish my hazy memories. It turns out John Facenda never said the most famous words credited to him and NFL Films, “the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field.” That was just Berman imitating Facenda. What the hell’s going on out here?

Let’s remember Ed Sabol and NFL Films, totally Berman-free.
